Capsule Endoscopy

Capsule endoscopy is a diagnostic tool which takes a video of the small intestine. The small intestine is a difficult area to reach through conventional endoscopy as it is long and convoluted. For a capsule endoscopy, the patient swallows a capsule of size of a vitamin pill, after a bowel cleanse. The capsule has a slippery coating and hence is easy to swallow without sedation.

Capsule endoscopy is particularly helpful in determining sources of bleeding within the small bowel, including polyps and small dilated blood vessels called arteriovenous malformations. It is not intended to examine the stomach or colon, which have a wider lumen, and hence require gas insufflation via gastroscopy and colonoscopy, for a thorough evaluation. Small bowel capsule endoscopy is a non-invasive procedure, performed in our rooms.
